Tod man pla, Thai fried fish cakes, at Thai Yim 2 in Paris 13

Origins and flavours

Tod man pla is an iconic Thai starter. ‘Tod’ means to fry, ‘man’ refers to the cake and ‘pla’ to fish: these are small cakes of fish, worked until they reach their characteristic bouncy texture, then fried.

Their fragrance comes from the seasoning: red curry paste, finely shredded makrut lime leaves and a little long bean for crunch. The result is a bite that is spicy, herby and moreish, happily dipped in a sweet-and-sour cucumber sauce.

At Thai Yim 2

At Thai Yim 2, we make them spicy, as they should be (spice 2/4), and serve them nice and crisp. A perfect starter to share at the start of a meal, before a soup or a pounded salad.
